Summer Meals are free for all kids age 18 and under!
The USDA Summer Food Service Program was established to ensure children in income eligible areas continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months when school is not in session. There are over 400 sites across Maine where anyone 18 and younger can get a free meal, no questions asked. Sponsors operating sites have been encouraged to bring the “Farm to Summer” and incorporate local foods to improve meal quality. In addition, sites depend on enrichment activities to attract and engage children throughout the summer. Sponsors can consider activities such as taking children on a farm trip or hosting farmers at sites to help bring the “Farm to Summer.” This year, there has also been a focus working with farmers’ markets as meal sites in eligible areas.
