MFFM Seeks New Executive Director

The Maine Federation of Farmers’ Markets (MFFM) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit running statewide programs that help sustain Maine farms, connect market farmers, strengthen farmers’ markets, and widen access to locally-grown food for all. MFFM seeks a visionary and committed leader to continue to grow the organization.

MFFM was incorporated in 1991, hired its first director in 2011, and now has 2 full time and 5-10 part time staff. Based in Pittsfield, it is the only statewide organization in Maine representing the interests of direct-to-consumer farmers and producers. Key projects include developing marketing campaigns, creating training and educational resources for market members and consumers, operating the Maine Harvest Bucks program, and advocating for direct-to-consumer local food venues.

MFFM’s next Executive Director should expect to lead a continued period of organizational growth in terms of funding, staff capacity, and programming. MFFM’s ED must be comfortable moving between administering the organization and hands-on program implementation.

Organizational Oversight and Development: The MFFM Board of Directors is closely involved in the work, but relies on the ED to operate the organization on a day-to-day basis, while also maintaining momentum towards the long-term vision. The Board meets monthly from November through April, and the ED assists the Chair in setting agendas and preparing materials. With MFFM’s current strategic plan winding down at the end of 2018, the new ED will also have the opportunity to help lead the next strategic planning process. The ED also ensures MFFM’s compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

Fundraising, Budgeting, and Financial Management: Working with the Board of Directors, the ED develops the annual budget and is responsible for raising the necessary funds, primarily through grants and sponsorships. A part time bookkeeper oversees the Quickbooks accounts and bill paying, but the ED implements the budget, approves expenses, and ensures accurate and timely reporting to the Board Treasurer. The ED is responsible for ensuring compliance with MFFM’s fiscal policies and with maintaining all pertinent records related to finances, personnel, insurance, and grants. Diversifying the revenue stream is a key goal for 2018-2019.

Building and Maintaining Relationships: It is essential that the ED maintain direct relationships with market farmers, including those on the Board of Directors and those farther afield. This entails frequent site visits to markets all over the state, and attendance at winter market meetings. The ED also represents the organization and its programs and perspective to members, partners, policymakers, the media and the general public. MFFM staff facilitate communication, information sharing and networking among Maine’s 120+ summer and 30+ winter farmers’ markets.

Communication: MFFM has a professionally developed brand and position. The ED ensures that MFFM’s voice remains consistent across all communications platforms, including the newsletter, social media, and with the press. Staff assist with some media streams, but the ED creates content regularly. The ED also seeks opportunities to engage with the media.

Conventions, trainings, and events: With the support of the Board of Directors, the ED plans all aspects of the annual Maine Farmers’ Market Convention. Other trainings and events take place throughout the year, for the benefit of market members and consumers.

Food access work: A significant portion of MFFM’s staff time is devoted to increasing access to local foods by individuals participating in the SNAP, WIC, and other food supplement programs. The ED monitors related policy, including serving on committees of the Maine Local Foods Access Network and National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, and is often called upon to advocate for Maine farmers and program participants. MFFM implements a program to help fund equipment for markets to process EBT transactions.

Advocacy: MFFM is the only statewide organization representing the interests of market farmers and producers. The ED will represent these interests to state and local leaders, plan programming to meet their needs, and work to ensure that direct-to-consumer venues for farm products remain a priority for communities statewide.

Database and resource management: MFFM maintains the only statewide database of Maine farmers’ markets, and the ED ensures that the database is consistently maintained and shared appropriately. With assistance from staff, the ED maintains the MFFM website, the market database, and the member database.
